In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ the Research Divisions, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Cape Town, Cape Town, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes, and to interrogate social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

Dr Andreas Scheba, from the City Region Economies working group in IED, is currently undertaking an international comparative study of informal occupations of land and buildings in Bogotá (Colombia), Cape Town (South Africa) and São Paulo (Brazil). As part of this research project, he is looking to appoint a freelance Research Assistant with existing networks and a track record of research on informal occupations in Cape Town, especially those located in the inner-city. The assignment will take a maximum of 35 days from signing of contract 2024. The successful incumbent will have to be based in the Cape Town.

Minimum Requirements

  • Applicants must have graduated with an Honours degree and either completed or are registered (proof of registration will be required at the time of application) for a Master’s degree in the Social Sciences (particularly in areas such as Urban Studies, Human Geography, Development Studies, Urban Planning);
  • Existing networks and track record of research with informal occupation(s) in Cape Town
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Competence in basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • A sound academic record;
  • Willingness to learn through hands on engagement in a variety of research activities;
  • Intellectual and personal integrity, a well-developed work ethic, and drive;
  • Self-discipline and the ability to manage both the demands of the job and ensure that university studies are timeously completed;
  • Applicants must be South African citizens.

 


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct and organise literature reviews and other secondary data analysis on informal occupations, including but not limited to Bogotá (Colombia), Cape Town (South Africa) and São Paulo (Brazil), focussing on examples of co-design processes and transitions to social housing
  • Undertake approximately fifteen qualitative interviews with experts in Cape Town and other two case study cities (virtually and/or face-to-face);
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of stakeholder workshops and public engagement events on informal occupations in the three case study cities
  • Assist with the analysis of qualitative data from previous research
  • Contribute to the preparation of peer reviewed academic journal articles, research reports, and presentations
