Key Accountabilities:

Monitor performance and mandate compliance for the Company’s unlisted investments.

• Monitor the externally managed unlisted property, private equity, and developmental investment portfolios.
• Check compliance with investment mandate terms.
• Check compliance with the unlisted valuations policy.
• Improve and maintain processes for monitoring and reporting on the Fund’s unlisted investments.
• Analyse data received from the Fund’s investment manager.
• Monitor portfolio performance and quarterly returns using Excel or other models.
• Compile ad-hoc investment-related reports and respond to queries relating to the unlisted portfolio.

Monitor and report on the Client -managed unlisted portfolio

• Compile and update reports on the client -managed unlisted assets; including direct investments, properties and fund of funds.
• Prepare reports every quarter for the relevant Board committees.
• Analyse and report on derivative structures utilised in the unlisted portfolio.
• Monitor underperforming investments and the investment manager’s remedial actions.

Support the Company’s valuation processes

• Analyse and assess the reliability of key assumptions made in the external valuations and highlight significant inconsistencies between valuations or in relation to industry norms.
• Analyse valuations using different valuation methodologies.
• Highlight significant changes in valuations and understand the driving factors.
• Provide analytical reporting on specific investments identified by the Investment Committee or the Valuations Committee (e.g. poorly performing investments).
• Produce an executive summary of the results of the annual external valuations for the Fund’s financial year-end.

Evaluate investment proposals presented to the Company

• Evaluate proposals submitted to the Company for unlisted investments.
• Consolidate key information relating to investment proposals.
• Analyse potential investment transactions to identify risk factors that could have a long-term financial impact on the Fund’s investment strategy.
• Check compliance of proposals against the Company’s investment mandate terms and policy.
• Make recommendations to the Unlisted Investments Manager and Head of Investments on the proposed investments

Economic and financial research

• Monitor developments in the African economies represented in the unlisted portfolio and identify imminent portfolio risks.
• Understand the portfolio companies and stay informed about trends in the relevant markets and sectors.
• Research investment trends and capital flows in emerging and frontier markets.
• Research the activities of large global asset allocators (institutional investors) in relation to investing in Africa.
• Participate in industry forums and collaborations such as SAVCA, AVCA, ILPA and GPCA.
• Support the Company ESG team in evaluating the developmental and social impact of the Company’s unlisted investments.

Investment administration

• Oversee administration and monitoring of private equity drawdowns and portfolio activity.
• Check private equity drawdown/capital call notices against contracts.
• Monitor and report on the service provider fees in line with contractual terms and budgetary plans.
• Create a database to record all fees paid to service providers for unlisted investments.
• Document and continuously improve investment administration processes

Support outsourced investments services

• Analyse and mandate terms and deployment levels with the client at every deployment review and recommend to Unlisted Investment Manager.
• Provide input into the due diligence process.
• Analyse the custodian and investment accounting services’ oversight processes.
• Review compliance with legislation and best practice principles and recommend to Unlisted Investment Manager.

Qualification and experience:
Education:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Investment Management is required.
• Postgraduate or further study towards a relevant Honours degree or industry qualification, e.g. CFA, CAIA, or CA(SA), is advantageous.

Experience:

• Minimum 3-5 years experience in investment banking, structured finance, or unlisted investment management.
• Experience in institutional investing, investment analysis and portfolio monitoring.
• Experience with quantitative techniques for analysing and valuing unlisted investments, focusing on unlisted property investments.
• Experience in engaging and building relationships with external stakeholders.
• Exposure to investment accounting, performance, and mandate compliance monitoring processes.
• Exposure to property and infrastructure investment.
• Developed expertise in identifying, evaluating, structuring, and negotiating debt and equity property transactions/investments.
• Hedge fund, private equity, fund of funds or multi-manager experience is beneficial

Knowledge:

• Ability to analyse financial information.
• In-depth understanding of the underlying accounting data utilised in valuations and performance calculations.
• Knowledge of different investment valuation methodologies.
• Understanding of institutional investing and the management of unlisted investments.
• A good understanding of investing for social and developmental impact.
• Understanding of the company and the pension fund industry in general.
• Understanding of economic principles, trends and their impact on investment portfolios
