VACANCY: OPERATOR: INDUCTION FURNACE

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: PERMANENT

GRADE: B-LOWER

DIVISION: SMELTER

 

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

  • The main purpose of this role is to safely blend, melt/smelt high grade customer deposits, blister copper to be atomised as per production plan and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • The role also includes the drying of atomised copper.
  • The position will be reporting to the Arc Furnace Foreman.

Major responsibilities

Resource Planning and Execution

  • Blend high grade low volume customer materials and smelt a minimum of 500kg per 12-hour shift
  • The operator will utilise the induction furnace to recover metal lock-up on the small deposits and transfer the final ingots to the refinery as part of Dore transfers or to the BBOC.
  • The operator role also includes the atomisation of blister copper into atomised copper and operate the drier to transfer the material to sampling (1000 kg per 12 hr shift).
  • Drying solid atomised copper product to separate oversize product from undersize stream
  • Ensure that the furnace availability is communicated immediately for optimised production
  • Should the furnace not be available, the individual reports for further instruction to the AF foremen/Control room coordinator.
  • Required to assist in AF tapping and BBOC clean-off.
  • Accurately report information as per Metal accounting requirements.

Operational Efficiencies

  • Ensures that all feed materials and by-products consumed/generated are weighed and sent for sampling for metal balance purposes.
  • Scales are calibrated prior to weighing material
  • Provides adequate troubleshooting within induction furnace through checking panel parameters.
  • Accurate reporting through production logs & performance feedback on shift basis to control room co-ordinator/AF Foreman
  • Ensure that daily production targets are achieved as instructed by control room co-ordinator/AF Foreman.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that there is full compliance with the SHEQ procedures for people, equipment, and product.
  • Ensure high housekeeping standards are maintained.
  • Come up with suggestions to improve safe work practices.
  • Timeous reporting of incidents and or near misses.
  • Involved in incident investigations and risk assessments.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

  • A preference will be given to a candidate with a completed matric qualification with mathematics and physical science.
  • Qualification in Chemical Eng or Metallurgy will be advantageous.

 

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Computer literacy- SAP and MS office.
  • Communication skills- able to communicate with others.
  • Able to train new operators.
  • Basic administrative skills- log sheets, checklists.
  • Honesty and integrity- A high moral code of conduct
  • Consistency – Able to perform in a consistent manner continuously
  • Results oriented, disciplined, able to execute and deliver to plan.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Preference will be given to a candidate with up to 3 years’ experience within a Smelting environment.
  • Production knowledge-Understand the production processes.
  • Equipment knowledge- Fault detection abilities.
  • SHEQ knowledge- Able to adhere to specified standards.
  • Induction furnace knowledge- Thorough understanding of equipment.
