This specific position that we are recruiting for is in SIQALO Foods Pty Ltd, a Remgro Group Company and market leader in Spreads with the well-known brands Rama, Stork and Flora. SIQALO Foods works in partnership with RCL Foods.

Our Talent Team are currently looking for a dynamic Research and Development (R&D) Packaging Development Manager to join the SIQALO Foods Business. The role will be based in Boksburg and report into the R&D Executive.

SIQALO Foods entrusts the R&D Packaging Manager to:

• Be responsible for Packaging Development across the continuum from medium to long term research on packaging design to the deployment in market.
• Formulate, lead and manage the packaging team and team agenda within Siqalo Foods.
• Provide technical skills on packaging development and implementation of fit-for-purpose packaging throughout the supply chain.
• Ensure approval of packaging materials and suppliers though approval process and packaging validation activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and expertise; in the area of Packaging development.
• Approval of new and amended Packaging BOM’s in SAP.
• Approval of packaging specifcations according to best practise requirements.
• Source new packaging innovation and create optimised packaging with strategic packaging partners to ensure annual packaging spend is maximized
• Suportive role to marketing in artwork development and online press approvals in partnership with Polyflex.
• Align packaging priorities with Siqalo Business Strategy. Formulate, introduce and manage systems and policies to support integration of the Packaging Strategy.
• Lead Packaging team functional business planning and ensure alignment to business objectives and goals.
• Challenge the status quo towards continual improvement in quality and speed of NPD delivery.
• Develop platforms for information sharing (Innovation Showcases, on-line archiving of information, bulletins)
• Consultative and contributory responsibility to procurement processes and negotiations for all packaging materials; as part of a broader team; to ensure packaging costs are contained and negotiated against accurate specifications to maximize profitability
• Proactive risk assessment and management. The key focus is to ensure compliance with respect to local regulations; and development in advance for global trends as they expand into SA. This with the express intent of protecting the company against current and anticipated changes with regards to packaging materials.
• High level interaction with company leaders both within Siqalo and with key external constituents (suppliers, industry leaders and influencers)
• Proactively network to align packaging supplier innovation and development with Siqalo’s innovation funnel and connect senior management to partner for the future.
• Lead the Packaging sustainability agenda. Formulate the supporting Packaging Sustainability Strategy with targets aligned to the Industry Waste Management Plan. Develop the necessary infrastructure within Siqalo to record packaging consumption and its impact on the environment and track target achievement to comply with Extended Producer Responsibility obligations.
• Provide strategic guidance to project teams on packaging and the broader business impacts of alternative packaging solutions.
• Mediate in instances of supplier non-conformances and factory site challenges associated with packaging.
• Through interaction and negotiation with Senior Management, enable organic, team-growth that is aligned to business expansion and the consequential increase in technical packaging support requirements
• Source, select and train superior talent and manage their performance through goal setting and tracking to successful delivery.
• Create a high-performance packaging culture by inspiring the packaging team.

Minimum Requirements

• Packaging Diploma (Institute of Packaging South Africa)
• NDip Food technology
• 8 years’ Packaging Innovation and development for FMCG products.
• 8 years’ experience within design, repro, print production & packaging materials industry.
• Business subject matter expert in packaging material types, formats, pack-out machinery, in-plant packaging converting equipment and packaging suppliers’ ways of working, plus the related impacts on our NPD process.
